Glucosamine & Osteoarthritis

Glucosamine supplements may help slow bone turnover, according to a recent study by the University of Toronto published in the May 2007 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.

Researchers studied sixteen rabbits with osteoarthritis (OA) and ten control rabbits. Approximately half were treated with glucosamine daily and half were given a placebo.

The study concluded that the high bone turnover in rabbits with osteoarthritis was significantly reduced in glucosamine-treated animals. In fact, both the OA and control groups treated with glucosamine showed very little difference in most bone parameters. Slowing bone turnover is beneficial for those with osteoarthritis.
